Not sure what to expect from your initial orthodontic consultation? This appointment is the first step in your new patient journey, and it's designed to be relaxed, informative and free of any obligation. At our Tauranga, Whakatane and Rotorua clinics, specialist orthodontists Mark Johnson and Justin Kearney will guide you through your assessment, X-ray and recommended treatment options.
Booking your initial consultation:
You don't need a referral from your dentist to see us. If you have concerns about your own or your child's oral health that you think may be related to their jaw structure, bite or tooth alignment, you can complete our self-referral form online or call us on 07 577 0916. We can arrange an appointment at whichever clinic suits you best, Tauranga, Whakatane or Rotorua. If your dentist has already referred you, simply let our team know when you get in touch.
What happens during your first orthodontic appointment
If your child is under 16 years of age, please attend with them so that we can discuss their case together. Please allow half an hour for your appointment.
During your visit, we'll take a comprehensive X-ray of your upper and lower jaw to help us make an accurate diagnosis. Mark and Justin will then assess your teeth, jaw and face to understand your specific needs, explain any issues they find, and answer your questions.
Because Mark and Justin are specialist orthodontists rather than general dentists, they've completed years of additional training focused specifically on diagnosing and treating complex bite, alignment and jaw development issues. That specialism means you leave your first appointment with a clear, professional view of your treatment options and an idea of your likely timeline.
What does an initial consultation cost?
Your initial consultation costs $160, which covers your appointment, X-ray, registration, and any letters or referrals to other health practitioners. Payment is due on the day by cash, cheque, credit card or EFTPOS.
What happens after your consultation?
If orthodontic treatment isn't needed straight away, we may place your child on recall to monitor their development, and we'll send a reminder when their next check is due. Recall appointments carry no charge.
If braces are recommended, you'll need two further appointments:
-
At your records appointment, we take full-mouth photographs, X-rays and dental impressions of your teeth so we can create your personalised treatment plan. This costs $360, payable on the day.
-
At your second appointment, we'll present your treatment plan and a written quote, including a payment plan. This typically includes an initial fee when your braces are fitted, with the balance spread over 18 months, plus your retainers and two years of follow-up supervision once treatment is complete.
We offer periodic, complimentary retainer review visits for 2 years after your treatment. After this time, we would be happy to see you as needed.
Most comprehensive treatment takes 12 to 36 months to complete, depending on the severity of your case. To find out more, take a look at the types of braces and Invisalign® clear aligners we offer, or get in touch with our team to book your initial consultation.
