One of the questions we hear most often from new patients is whether orthodontic treatment is painful. It is a fair thing to wonder about, and the honest answer is reassuring. Most people feel some mild discomfort early on rather than real pain, and it settles quickly as their mouths adjust.
What braces feel like at first
It takes a little time to get used to the feeling of braces. For the first few days after your braces are fitted, you might notice some tenderness as your teeth begin to move into their new position. This is completely normal and a sign that treatment is doing its job. You may feel something similar for a day or two after each adjustment appointment, when your braces are tightened to keep things progressing.
How to ease the discomfort
If you do feel sore, ordinary pain relief such as Panadol or Nurofen can make those first few days more comfortable. Sticking to softer foods for a day or two also helps, since your teeth can feel sensitive when you bite down. Most patients find the tenderness eases on its own within a week.
What to expect at each stage
Here is what to expect at the key stages:
-
When braces are first fitted, there may be mild tenderness for a few days as teeth start to move.
-
After an adjustment: short-lived sensitivity that usually settles within a day or two.
-
Between visits: little to no discomfort once your mouth has adapted.
Comfort can also depend on the type of appliance you choose, though every option comes with its own adjustment period. Fixed braces can cause some initial rubbing on the cheeks and lips as you get used to the brackets and wires.
Invisalign® avoids that particular issue, but has its own early adjustments, such as getting used to taking your aligners in and out and some temporary changes to speech. Most patients settle into either option within the first couple of weeks.
Everyone experiences treatment a little differently, so if something feels unusually uncomfortable or a part of your brace is digging in, let us know. We would always rather hear from you and put your mind at ease than have you wait it out.
